Burg Hohenzollern, Germany

Burg Hohenzollern, one of the most visited castles in Germany, is situated about 50km south of Stuttgart in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Originally built in the eleventh century it had to be re-built in the 14 hundreds after being destroyed in a ten ten-month long siege.

Getting up to the castle requires a steep uphill walk, alternatively, you can catch a bus up for a couple of Euros. Entry fee to the castle is then around seven euro. The inside is filled with beautiful decor and historical artifacts from the collections of the Hohenzollern family and no photography is allowed – which is, even more reason to go see the beautiful pieces for yourself. It is hard to believe that people lived up on this mountain surveying their vast kingdom.

You can explore so much of the castle, from the extensive family tree of the Hohenzollern family to the armour used in battles and the servants quarters. Free tours are available regularly and are full of historical information and fun facts about the castle, running in German and English.

To get to the wonderful lookout pictured below, follow the directions and read more in my blog post: Zeller Horn Lookout, Germany. I highly recommend it, and you can easily do both in one day as the lookout is not far from the castle however you will need a car to get there.

Interesting Facts

  • The castle is too cold to be inhabited during the winter months.
  • The castle was damaged in an earthquake on 3 September 1978 and was under repair until the mid-1990s.
  • With over 300,000 visitors per year, Hohenzollern Castle is one of the most visited castles in Germany
